Diamonds on Black Velvet
Original Pastel on Sanded Paper. Original for sale. Contact artist.
I love to play with lighting in my paintings. Light is most dramatic when it is set against shadows. This is not unlike what happens when a jeweler places a diamond on black velvet; the light refracted within the stone is magnified and intensified. That is why I chose "Diamonds on Black Velvet" as the title for this pastel. Though this is a common composition - a path in the forest - the lighting is the star, and would not be as intense were there not the shadows. It draws you in, and adds to the intrigue and enjoyment.
